The Esalen Institute is situated in the environs of Big Sur in California. The legendary Highway 1 runs through here. The Coast of Big Sur is the most beautiful and most romantic part of this strip of coast; this breathtaking landscape is hard to describe in words. In this region, the author Robert L. Stevenson found inspiration for his book "Treasure Island", and described the landscape of Big Sur as follows: "Big Sur is where mountains encounter the ocean on a dramatic rendezvous. It is the greatest meeting of land and water in the world."
The Big Sur Coast is sparsely populated and there are only a few spots with access to the beaches. However the numerous viewpoints enable a glance through the woods onto the jagged coastline. To this day this landscape has successfully protected itself against the massive tourist onset.
